GUILTLESS : neurosis, destruction and walls of riffs.

Written by Album Review, Chronique

Warning: if you’re already neurotic and deeply depressed about the current world events and uncertain future, don’t listen to this album or read any further – you won’t find any comfort in it. However, if you’re not afraid of confronting yourself, let yourself be carried away by the emotional darkness of Guiltless.

Their debut album “Teeth to Sky” features musicians from various other bands equally renowned for their joie de vivre and positivism (Intronaut, Generation of Vipers, A Storm of Light), and also happens to be released on Neurot Recordings, a benchmark for intense and punishing music.

Evoking a delusional human species, even questioning the very validity of its existence, the notion of destruction is central to Teeth to Sky. After all, isn’t Man the only animal species that kills its peers, enslaving them to use them as mere objects to satisfy meaningless personal fantasies, destroying its living environment for the sole purpose of accumulating goods that benefit no one?

Josh Graham’s words, whose pain is palpable in each and every word he says, drive us deeper into the guilt of our daily actions by bringing us a little closer to the inevitable: the extinction of the human species. The dense, thick sound of fellow riffmeisters Dan Hawkins and Sacha Dunable creates soundscapes worthy of an open-air tomb with gut-wrenching climaxes, taking us right up to the point of collapse, leaving us to face our dilemmas. These incredibly evocative ambiences get masterfully emphasized by Billy Graves’ drumming: like an atomic clock, each strike leads us towards our End.

You may find it hard to see “Teeth to Sky” as a “beautiful” album or something that provides serenity, yet it’s an incredibly heavy and profound record, offering catharsis to those brave enough to listen to it and reflect on themselves. We’re still alive, so let’s make the most of every moment and try to change this shitty world!
